Gwen Stefani's "Baby Don't Lie" - Single Review

Six long years have passed since the release of an official Gwen Stefani single, as die-hard fans desperately await new material from the "Hollaback Girl" singer. With a new judging stint on the latest season of The Voice, the No Doubt frontwoman is ready to present her yet-untitled third solo album with the unveiling of the effort's lead single, the surprising and intriguing snyth-heavy "Baby Don't Lie", which leaked earlier than the original release date.

Stefani, who has garnered numerous solo hits over the years including "Rich Girl", "Wind It Up" and "The Sweet Escape", has been working hard on her next full length while simultaneously cranking out new tunes with No Doubt for a follow up to 2012's underrated Push and Shove. The hard work seems to be paying off as the new single marks a vast departure from the artist's previous releases, becoming a catchy listen true to her originality.

"Baby Don't Lie", which receives production help from heavy-hitters Ryan Tedder and Benny Blanco, is a new sound for the "Cool" singer as a Caribbean-vibe encompasses the listener within the first few notes. Stefani sings of the hope that her lover keeps things real in their relationship, no room for lying, over a slick dance beat which sounds reminiscent of tunes from the likes of Rihanna, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. "Baby don't lie, I don't wanna cry no longer, baby don't, baby don't, baby don't lie, I'mma need a love that's stronger," she repeats on the infectious chorus.

As the new single opens, listeners could have expected a hard-hitting pop stomper (I got a small hint of "Single Ladies"), however, that thought quickly vanishes as Stefani's soft vocals provide for a mid-tempo effort which works wonders as a comeback track. "Baby Don't Lie" is fascinating and captivating, it complements the artist's impressive, slightly wounded, vocal performance and sets itself apart from the rest of the crowd. Fans and critics may have wanted another overdose of sugary pop from Stefani, but it's commendable how she continues to shock and surprise.

Congrats Gwen, you already have my $1.29 (plus tax)!
