Why Kate Middleton Wore A Tiara But Meghan Markle Didn't During State Dinner - ELLE.com Posted: 24 Oct 2018 12:00 AM PDT Mark this week in your calendars, people, because it was a momentous occasion for the Royal Family. Okay, so maybe it wasn't that big of a deal, but it certainly was when it came to Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton's fashion choices. On Tuesday, Meghan dazzled in a Ginkgo cape dress by London-based brand Safiyaa for her first state dinner, hosted by the President of Fiji. The same day, Kate Middleton looked like a real-life Cinderella in a blue Alexander McQueen dress for a similar dinner at Buckingham Palace in hour of the King and Queen of the Netherlands. While the royals may have matched in blue for their respective formal dinners, there was one stand-out difference in their attire - their headwear. For the mother-to-be's appearance at Grand Pacific Hotel in Fiji, Markle notable didn't wear any jewellery, other than a pair of oversized chandelier yellow diamond earrings paired with a Cartier diamond bracelet. Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cambridge accessorised her dress with the 'Lover's Knot' diamond tiara that once belonged to Princess Diana. 'So, why was Kate allowed to wear a tiara and not Meghan?' you ask. Well, contrary to speculation that the women's royal ranks decide who wears a tiara, the decision actually comes down to the occasion's dress code and personal preference. HELLO! reports state dinners are slightly less formal than state banquets, so this may explain why the former actress chose against wearing a diamond-encrusted headpiece. Also, let's not forget that Markle is over 10,500 miles away right now, meaning she would've had to risk traveling with previous jewels, more than likely from the Royal jewellery archive, for her visit. For anyone who has had to wait 24 hours to receive their lost baggage following a long-haul flight, we have a feeling she might have passed on the opportunity to wear a tiara this one time. Just think of the travel insurance... Meanwhile, Kate's state dinner appeared to be the perfect opportunity for the royal to pay sweet tribute to her husband, Prince William. The Lover's Knot tiara, which was one of the late Princess Diana's favourite, is often referred to as the Cambridge Lover's Knot. Bestowed the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their wedding day in 2011, we couldn't imagine a sweeter way for the mother-of-three to honour Diana's memory, her royal title, and her husband. Kate also paid tribute to William with a brooch at the occasion, which had an adorable secret meaning relating to his work as a patron of Tusk Trust. While it's unknown whether Markle has travelled with a collection of tiaras for her first official royal tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand, she did have the opportunity to wear a piece from the royal archive not too long ago. On her wedding day on 19 May, the Duchess of Sussex borrowed a diamond centre-stone adorned filigree tiara, formerly owned by Queen Mary. We can't wait for Meghan's next 'tiara moment'. |
